ALS / MND

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, MND and Lou Gehrig's disease, is a neurological disease that attacks the motor neurons responsible for the use of voluntary muscles. ALS typically progresses rapidly, causing severe weakness that can develop into complete immobility. Along the way, speech impairment may develop into an inability to communicate effectively.

CEREBRAL PALSY (CP)

Cerebral palsy, also known as CP, is a group of chronic conditions affecting movement and coordination. Depending on its severity, it can impair the way patients walk, talk, use their hands, and engage in nearly any physical task. It makes dealing with everyday activities a lifelong challenge.

APHASIA / STROKE

Aphasia is an acquired language disorder that results from a neurological event, such as a stroke or brain injury. While aphasia does not impact intelligence, it does make it difficult to understand speech and written words and express one’s self verbally and in writing. Daily activities, social interactions and learning new things that require speech can be impacted at varying degrees from the onset of aphasia

Neurological conditions

Multiple Sclerosis, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Disease can affect an individual’s ability to speak due to Dysarthria. In general, it affects a person’s ability to articulate words causing unintelligible speech or a loss of speech due to a disorder in the nervous system. This may coincide with a loss of muscle control.

Spinal Cord Injury

Users with a tetraplegia / quadriplegia spinal cord injury can access their computer and the Internet, in a relaxed and natural way, using only their eyes or with a combination of eyes and a switch.

This technology can allow those paralyzed from a spinal cord injury to send e-mails, meet people online, use social media, feel less isolated and lead a more active, healthy social life. .

Rett Syndrome

Rett Syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that almost exclusively affects girls and has a profound effect on their ability to communicate.

As the stage progresses, spoken language and movement are affected, leading to difficulties communicating.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an acquired condition that occurs when the brain is damaged. Brain injuries can be the result of a violent blow or a jolt to the head in which the brain collides with the inside of the skull. Less common is traumatic brain injury resulting from an object penetrating the skull and the brain.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

Intellectual disability, sometimes referred to as cognitive disability, affects approximately one in ten families. Some of these individuals may experience difficulty with self-expression and social connections.

Autism

Autism is a complex developmental disorder which affects and impairs social, communication and behavioral functions in individuals.

Strategies such as modelling, narratives and scripts may help someone with autism to relate to the people in their family and world around them.
